Abigail Thomas, daughter of the esteemed science writer Lewis Thomas, has led a multifaceted life as a mother of four and grandmother of twelve. Her academic journey was interrupted when, during her first year at Bryn Mawr, she was asked to leave due to pregnancy. Residing primarily on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Abigail ventured into the worlds of book editing and literary representation before finding her calling as a writer.
In her literary career, Abigail has authored three novels—Getting Over Tom, An Actual Life, and Herb’s Pajamas—and three memoirs: Safekeeping, A Three Dog Life, and Thinking About Memoir, a unique blend of writing guidance and personal reflection. A Three Dog Life received critical acclaim, earning recognition from publications such as the Washington Post and the LA Times as one of the standout books of 2006. It has since been translated into nine languages, captivating readers worldwide.
Abigail’s essays and short stories have graced the pages of prestigious publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post, O the Oprah Magazine, and Real Simple, among others. Currently residing in Woodstock, New York, Abigail shares her home with her beloved trio of canine companions, continuing to draw inspiration from the tranquility of rural life as she crafts her next literary endeavors.
